The Key to Writing Letters

Sadly writing letters is starting to become a thing of the past, but for those who still write letters this article is for you. You may be just getting into writing letters or perhaps you have done it for awhile but are looking to improve your letter writing skills. Accomplishing that might be just easier than you think.

Writing a letter isn’t the same thing as writing an essay for class, or responding to a blog comment online. Letters aren’t a professionally written paper or just a few words getting your opinion out there. Letters are special because they come from the heart. In other words you don’t need to use a plethora of big words or make sure every single piece of grammar is perfect in a letter. Instead you simply need to follow your heart…

Over the years I have learned that the single most important part of letter writing is to write what comes from the heart. It’s simple to do this, you just sit down at your desk with the blank letter in front of you and the pen in your hand. Then when you go to write you let the words flow through you, don’t over think it, just write what feels true. Even if the letter is something simple like a note being sent with a holiday card the words still need to come from the heart above all else.

I remember when I was a little girl, probably eight or nine, my mother always asked me to be in charge of writing letters to the family members. It wasn’t because she wasn’t capable of doing it but it was simply because she loved the way that I wrote. She felt like my words would really make the reader feel better and I was happy to do it.
Back then I didn’t understand why my mother wanted me to do all the writing but I did it anyway. Looking back on it now I finally understand but more so than understanding, I realize that I love to write, every thought or feeling that goes through me I want to put onto paper.

The reason I bring up my personal story is because no matter what age you are, you are more than capable of writing a beautiful letter. And if you start writing young then you may find out that writing becomes a lifelong passion of yours. Remember the key to any good writing is that it comes from the heart.
